Key points
In Belgium
Situation checked in the corpus as at 31-10-2026.
According to FPS BOSA:
-
The European reason. MyGov.be was not developed to replace itsme®, but to comply with the eIDAS 2.0 Regulation. The FPS writes:
That is, according to the FPS, the regulation requires EU Member States to offer their citizens an official digital identity wallet by the end of 2026 at the latest. The regulation itself words the deadline as follows: each Member State provides at least one European Digital Identity Wallet within 24 months of the date of entry into force of certain implementing acts Art. 5a(1) (see step 3).
-
Freedom of choice. Several authentication keys coexist, for example eID, itsme® and MyGov.be; other keys, public or private, may be recognised if they meet the eIDAS requirements and pass security, privacy, reliability and availability audits FPS BOSA — news item of 05-02-2026, L'application MyGov.be comme clé numérique : tout ce que vous devez savoir !.
-
The level of trust. MyGov.be is presented as an authentication key offering a high level of trust; itsme® as “reconnue et accréditée” (recognised and accredited) by the Belgian administration FPS BOSA — news item of 05-02-2026, L'application MyGov.be comme clé numérique : tout ce que vous devez savoir !. The law of 18 July 2017 speaks, for private identification services, of approval by FPS BOSA Art. 10(1).
-
A public alternative. The FPS explains that Europe wants a public solution for digital identity, in case a private player ceases its activities, is taken over or no longer meets European standards FPS BOSA — news item of 05-02-2026, L'application MyGov.be comme clé numérique : tout ce que vous devez savoir !.
The FPS describes MyGov.be as the “portefeuille d’identité numérique de l’administration” (the administration’s digital identity wallet) FPS BOSA — news item of 05-02-2026, L'application MyGov.be comme clé numérique : tout ce que vous devez savoir !. The identification of MyGov.be with the “portefeuille fédéral d’identité numérique” (federal digital identity wallet) of the law of 16 July 2026 comes from the explanatory memorandum to the bill, not from the law Chamber of Representatives, DOC 56 1562/001 (tabled on 21-05-2026), EXPOSÉ GÉNÉRAL Art. 2(1)(3). The commentary on Article 3 of the same bill adds that this wallet will evolve into a wallet within the meaning of the eIDAS Regulation (“e.a.” in the French version, “m.a.w.”, that is, “in other words”, in the Dutch version) as soon as the European framework setting the conditions for such a wallet is fully ready and has entered into force Chamber of Representatives, DOC 56 1562/001 (tabled on 21-05-2026), Art. 3. No source in the corpus, consulted on 31-10-2026, announces the certification of MyGov.be as a European wallet Art. 5d(3).
