Summary
Purpose
Technical specification ETSI TS 119 512 (version 1.2.1, May 2023) defines the protocols between a client and a long-term preservation service for digital signatures and data
ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 1 ScopeETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, History. It complements TS 119 511, which sets the policy and security requirements for these services:
The present document complements ETSI TS 119 511 [i.14] and specifies protocols for trust service providers providing long-term data preservation services
For each call of the preservation interface, it first defines the semantics, then the syntax in XML and in JSON, with a SOAP binding and a REST binding ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 1 Scope.
Who it applies to
- Preservation service providers, for the interface they offer to their clients ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 1 Scope; Annex II to Implementing Regulation 2025/2162 cites it for qualified preservation services for qualified electronic signatures and seals Annex II.
- Scheme owners of conformity assessment schemes, who include this specification, as applicable, among the standards of their schemes Art. 6(3) Annex II.
Key points
- Architecture: a preservation service offers an interface used by the client ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 4.1 System architecture.
- Three storage models: with storage, with temporary storage, without storage ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 4.3 Storage models.
- Profiles: the service offers preservation scheme profiles, which may apply different evidence policies ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 4.4 Preservation schemes, profile and policies.
- Operations: discovery of profiles (RetrieveInfo), submission of objects to be preserved (PreservePO), conditional retrieval of objects (RetrievePO), among others ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 5.3.2 RetrieveInfo ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 5.3.3 PreservePO ETSI TS 119 512 V1.2.1, § 5.3.4 RetrievePO (Conditional).
What the acts apply, and how
- Implementing Regulation 2025/2162: its Annex II cites TS 119 512, without a version, for qualified preservation services for qualified electronic signatures and qualified electronic seals Annex II. Scheme owners ensure that their conformity assessment schemes include at least these standards, as applicable, indicating the year and version number Art. 6(3). The corrigendum to this Regulation corrects, in the row for signatures, the reference ETSI EN 310 401 to EN 319 401 Corrigendum R(01) — Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2162.
- Implementing Regulation 2025/1946: it does not cite TS 119 512. It makes applicable, with adaptations, TS 119 511 version 1.1.1 List of reference standards and specifications referred to in Article 2, whose requirement PRP-8.1-02 only recommends (should) using the protocol of TS 119 512, cited among the informative references ETSI TS 119 511 V1.1.1, § 8.1 Preservation protocol. The adaptations in the annex do not touch this clause List of reference standards and specifications referred to in Article 2. Regulation 910/2014 presumes that the qualified preservation service for qualified electronic signatures complies with the requirements of paragraph 1 where it complies with these standards, specifications and procedures Art. 34(1a); this article applies mutatis mutandis to the preservation of qualified electronic seals Art. 40.
