Summary
Purpose
Technical specification ETSI TS 119 442 (version 1.1.1, February 2019) defines the protocols by which a client asks a remote server to validate or augment AdES digital signatures ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 1 Scope ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, History. The signatures concerned are those in the formats standardised by ETSI, including standards ETSI EN 319 122, EN 319 132 and EN 319 142 ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 1 Scope. Its scope begins as follows:
The present document specifies the semantics of a protocol for requesting to a remote server (and for receiving the corresponding response) the validation of AdES digital signatures
It defines three protocols (validation, augmentation, validation and augmentation) and, for each, two technical bindings, one in XML and the other in JSON ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 1 Scope. An augmentation request indicates the level to which the signature is to be augmented ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 6.1.2.2 Component for identifying the level the signatures are requested to be augmented to.
Who it applies to
- Signature validation servers, in their dialogue with their clients ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 1 Scope; Annex II to Implementing Regulation 2025/2162 cites it for qualified validation services for qualified electronic signatures and seals Annex II.
- Scheme owners of conformity assessment schemes, who include this specification, as applicable, among the standards of their schemes Art. 6(3) Annex II.
Key points
- Reuse of DSS-X: the protocols reuse as far as possible the OASIS DSS-X core v2.0 standard and add functions that it does not offer ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 1 Scope.
- Validation functions: validate one or more PAdES signatures in the same PDF, validate only some of them, request the application of a validation policy, and receive a detailed validation report, signed or not ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 4.1 Main features.
- Validation report: the specification refers to the report defined by ETSI TS 119 102-2 ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 4.1 Main features.
- Limit: the protocols do not provide for sending ASiC containers to the server; the client can extract the signatures from them and submit them one by one ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 1 Scope.
- Processing models: clause 8 describes how the server locates, validates and augments the signatures, then builds its response ETSI TS 119 442 V1.1.1, § 8 Processing models.
What the acts apply, and how
- Implementing Regulation 2025/2162: its Annex II cites TS 119 442, without a version, for qualified validation services for qualified electronic signatures and qualified electronic seals Annex II. Scheme owners ensure that their conformity assessment schemes include at least these standards, as applicable, indicating the year and version number Art. 6(3). The corrigendum to this Regulation corrects the row for seals, which cited ETSI EN 310 401 instead of EN 319 401 Corrigendum R(01) — Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2162.
- Implementing Regulation 2025/1942: it makes applicable, subject to adaptations, TS 119 441 version 1.2.1, which sets the policy requirements for validation services Annex. In this intermediate standard, requirement SVP-8.2-01 only recommends (should) that the service protocol conform to TS 119 442, cited among the informative references ETSI TS 119 441 V1.2.1, § 8.2 Signature validation protocol. The annex does not modify this requirement; in clause 8.2, it adapts only requirement SVP-8.2-03 Annex. Regulation 910/2014 presumes that the qualified validation service for qualified electronic signatures complies with the requirements of paragraph 1 where it complies with the standards, specifications and procedures referred to in paragraph 2, here those of the annex to Implementing Regulation 2025/1942; TS 119 442 plays a part there only through the recommendation cited Art. 33(2); this article applies mutatis mutandis to the validation of qualified electronic seals Art. 40.
