Summary
Purpose
European standard ETSI EN 319 162-2 (version 1.1.1, April 2016) is the second part of the standard on Associated Signature Containers (ASiC) ETSI EN 319 162-2 V1.1.1, § 1 Scope ETSI EN 319 162-2 V1.1.1, History. It defines additional containers for uses that the baseline containers of part 1 do not cover ETSI EN 319 162-2 V1.1.1, § 4.1 Introduction ETSI EN 319 162-1 V1.1.1. Its scope states this as follows:
Specific communities or use cases may have additional requirements that are not addressed by the baseline containers defined in ASiC part 1
Who it applies to
- To Member States that require an advanced electronic signature or seal for an online service offered by, or on behalf of, a public sector body, for the ASiC-E CAdES container only Art. 1(1) Art. 3(1) Annex I Art. 27(1) Art. 37(1).
- To the signature creation applications of wallets, for which ASiC is an optional format Annex IV.
Key points
- Three additional containers: ASiC-S with time assertion, ASiC-E with CAdES and ASiC-E with time assertion ETSI EN 319 162-2 V1.1.1, § 4.1 Introduction.
- ASiC-E CAdES: it takes over the requirements of part 1 for ASiC-E, with additional restrictions; a conforming implementation may support the same levels as the baseline containers of part 1 ETSI EN 319 162-2 V1.1.1, § 4.3.1 ASiC-E CAdES additional container.
- Other container formats: an informative annex describes the use of ASiC with existing formats (OCF, ODF, UCF) ETSI EN 319 162-2 V1.1.1, § 1 Scope ETSI EN 319 162-2 V1.1.1, Annex A (informative): Using ASiC with existing container specifications.
What the acts apply, and how
- Implementing Regulation 2026/248: Member States that require an advanced electronic signature (or one based on a qualified certificate) recognise those that use a container conforming to Annex I; the same rule applies to seals Art. 1(1) Art. 3(1). Annex I names part 1 and, for part 2, only the ASiC-E CAdES additional container as specified in paragraph 4.3.1 Annex I. The ASiC-S and ASiC-E containers with time assertion (paragraphs 4.2.1 and 4.3.2) are not referred to Annex I ETSI EN 319 162-2 V1.1.1, § 4.1 Introduction. These paragraphs of the regulation apply from 23 February 2027 Art. 6.
- Implementing Regulation 2024/2979: Annex IV cites parts 1 and 2, without limiting part 2 to one container, among the optional formats for signing containers; the only mandatory format is PAdES Annex IV ETSI EN 319 142-1 V1.2.1. Signature creation applications must produce at least the mandatory format Art. 12(2).
